Dental Implants

Whether as the result of tooth decay, periodontal disease or some form of trauma, countless people suffer the loss of one or more teeth.

For decades, the go-to treatment for missing teeth was bridges and dentures. While these treatment options are still very much effective for many patients, dental implants represent the premier solution for the restoration of form, function and good health to the mouth.

Implants are the only method of tooth restoration that replicate each part of the missing tooth, from the root to the cusps. When you have dental implants placed, you’ll leave your appointment with the renewed ability to bite, chew, speak and smile with a brand-new sense of confidence and ease.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are artificial roots for replacement teeth. They are made of a titanium post that is implanted into the jawbone. Once the implants have been set in place, they start to fuse with the jawbone in a process that is called osseointegration. This process is made possible by the fact that titanium is one of the materials that is considered to be biocompatible. What this means is that the body doesn’t identify titanium as a foreign substance. The body is unable to distinguish between the natural tooth root and dental implants. This means that dental implants are not likely to be rejected by the body, and thus become an integral part of the mouth.

Because dental implants are firmly anchored in the jawbone, they can provide secure and stable support for crowns, bridges, and dentures.
While the restorations and prosthetics may need to be replaced every decade or so, the titanium implants themselves can potentially last a lifetime.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are a permanent tooth root replacement option. They are made with surgical-grade titanium that will fuse with the living tissue in the jawbone, to provide a sturdy foundation for a prosthetic crown. Our teeth support and preserve the jawbone. When one or more teeth are missing, you can see bone regression and loss. Gaps between teeth can also lead to the shifting of otherwise healthy teeth. It can also lead to the signs of premature aging.
Dental implants will restore functionality to your mouth, offer improved aesthetics and also ensure that your jawbone and mouth are able to remain healthy.

There are a few alternatives to dental implants. A bridge, which is a prosthetic that bridges the gap between healthy remaining teeth, can restore aesthetics. A bridge does often need to be anchored by a crown-capped tooth or an implant, in order to secure it in place. A bridge is a suitable option for between one and three missing teeth in a row. Patients who are missing more teeth can benefit more from a partial or full denture solution.
These are not permanent solutions for tooth replacement, but they are effective for patients who cannot yet budget implants, or those who are not suitable candidates for dental implants.

periodontist

The first step to getting your dental implants placed will be a complete examination of the gum and the jawbone that will be receiving the implant. Your dentist may have X-rays done, to verify that there is adequate bone for placement and to determine the best placement for the implant post.

The area will be numbed completely so that you’ll feel no discomfort during the surgical implantation. Once you are numb and comfortable, your doctor will surgically place the titanium post into your jawbone. To ensure your smile is still aesthetically pleasing, a temporary crown will be placed over the implant until your permanent crown is ready for placement.

It can take several weeks for the titanium implant to fuse to the healthy jawbone tissue and for the healing process to be completed. There should be no discomfort felt during the healing stage.

Dental implants can offer patients a multitude of unique benefits when they are compared to other tooth-replacement methods.

Perhaps the largest benefit is that dental implants can fully restore your oral health. When a natural tooth is lost, the body interprets that tooth loss as a sign that the gum and jawbone tissues that once supported the tooth no longer require nutrients and other important resources. As a result of this, the gum and jawbone tissues start to degrade. This can result in a host of oral health concerns that could range from an increased vulnerability to infection and severe orthodontic concerns.

When dental implants are implants to replace missing teeth, the body will stop the degradation process in the gum and jawbone. The mouth will soon return to a healthier state.

Implants are also a stable means of securing dentures in place. Traditional removable dentures, regardless of how meticulously crafted they are to fit within the mouth, are constantly facing the risk of slipping out of place, generally at the most inopportune of moments.
Implant-supported dentures offer a sturdy and secure way to wear dentures. They won’t slip or shift once they are set in place. Patients will find that they are able to eat, speak, and smile widely with the very same confidence that they would have with a mouth that contains only their natural healthy teeth.
