Inlays & Onlays

Small cavities and cracks in your tooth can typically be addressed with a filling. There are times, however, when a filling is not sufficient to restore a tooth that has an area of significant decay.

The tooth may not yet be a candidate for root canal treatment and may not yet be in rough enough shape for it to need a crown. The next best option to restore the decayed or damaged too in order to restore the tooth’s aesthetics and functionality.

What are inlays and onlays?

Inlays and onlays are a type of tooth restoration solution. They are custom made to slip over larger areas where decay was removed or where the tooth cracked or chipped.
They differ from standard fillings in that these smaller fillings are typically handled in just one visit to the clinic. The inlay or an onlay needs to be milled in a lab in order to offer you the best fit. Once they are set in place they offer a natural look for your restored tooth. The use of the inlay or the onlay will help to preserve more of the original structure of your tooth.

The inlay and onlay are quite similar in design and function. However, inlays are prosthetics that fit within the cusp tips of a tooth. Onlays are the more extensive restoration solution that extends over the cusps of the tooth that is being restored.

Dental Inlay or Onlay Dublin

This is a decision that can only be made by your dentist once the tooth has been thoroughly examined. A tooth that has a relatively small area of damage may be restored with a simple filling. If the tooth has too much damage, then it might not be possible to restore with a filling alone. There will need to be sufficient healthy tooth in order to restore aesthetics and functionality to the tooth.

Your dentist will be able to determine which restoration solution is the best one that will ensure you meet your ultimate oral healthcare goals.

what are inlays and onlays - Dublin 2

The procedures for being fitted for an inlay or onlay is very similar to the procedure involved with getting fitted for a crown. The key difference between the two is that the crown procedure is typically done as a means to restore functionality and reinforce a tooth that has had extensive work done on it. As is the care for root canal therapy. The procedure for inlays and onlays has more of the tooth’s original and natural structure to work with.

The procedure for fitting a crown may often require a fair amount of reshaping and building up of the tooth in order to ensure a snug fit once the crown is placed. The goal of opting for inlays or onlays is to save as much of the tooth’s natural structure as is possible.

To begin the procedure, your dentist will use a local anesthetic to numb the tooth and gum surrounding the tooth. The decay and other signs of damage will then be removed. The tooth and surrounding area will be sterilized with a cleansing solution. Your dentist will then take an impression that will be sent to the laboratory so that it can mill the inlay or onlay using the impression as a guide. A temporary filling will be used, to protect the tooth until the permanent prosthetic is ready.

You will need to return to the clinic for a second visit so that the completed onlay or inlay can be set in place.

Options for treating cavities

The tooth restorations we do at Gallagher Dental are durable and long-lasting. They will be able to stand up to the bite force they are subjected to. Inlays and onlays generally do not need any specialised care over the very same care that you give to your natural teeth.

Be sure to keep up with a good home oral hygiene routine that includes brushing, flossing and using a good quality mouth rinse.
